Mean specific growth rate of Atlantic salmon Salmo salar among treatment groups in three different size classes. Data calculated as mean specific growth rate (g day-1) ± standard error. Sample size for size classes I (80 to 99 mm FL), II (100 to 119 mm FL) and III (120 to 135 mm FL) were as follows: control (n = 24, 24, 24), sham-operated (n = 24, 24, 24), 23 mm PIT tag (n = 22, 24, 24), 23 mm PIT tag and suture (n = 24, 24, 24), 32 mm PIT tag (n = 7, 16, 23). Differences in sample size are due to mortality and loss of PIT tags. Within each size class, bars not sharing the same letter are significantly different at P <0.05 (Tukey honestly significant difference). PIT, passive integrated transponder.
